Oh boy does it bounce!

Thirty three years ago my lovely sibling was born. My parents purchased a Silver Cross pram. It was impressive, and particularly useful if you only wanted to move forward and backwards. Navigating corners – not quite as much.

Four years later I arrived. As a second child most things, as expected, were second hand, including the pram.  It was then retired from service.  Until now.

Some twenty eight years later and the pram is back.  That and the high chair were the first items my parents bought out of retirement when we found out we were expecting.  It has been rejuvenated; rust has been removed, a new mattress and a colourful personalised Barney blanket.   That probably detracts from the fact it’s almost thirty four years old.

And boy does it bounce. Luckily he’s a baby who likes to bounce.

When we arrived last week the weather was fairly bleak and cold. “If the weather was nicer I would take him for a walk up the road in the pram“, Mum said, peering up at the grey sky. It was obvious she had been dying to use it.

As if by magic Barney was in said pram adorning his blue tea cosy hat and new colourful blanket. Said pram was then wheeled from the living room to the lounge, bumping off the furniture as navigation is not an easy feat when it only moves parallel.

And they were off. The weather was closing in but who cared, the pram was officially out on the open road. It was cold out and she set off without a jacket, eager to get out quick whilst he was still content. It wouldn’t be half as much fun if he cried. In fact if he cried it would completely spoil the moment I’m sure.  Apparently he was singing up the road, so he must have been enjoying the motion that those huge satellite dish wheels created.

Ten minutes later the skies opened and you’ve guessed it, he cried. They reappear, Mum’s hair frizzy from the sticky rain, and she’s mouthing the words “it’s raining“.

I pulled back the pram canopy which she’d put up to shelter Barney from the elements. He was unscathed and had survived his first bounce up the hill, perhaps even enjoyed it!
